Eric's Movie Party!
Tootsie (1982)

Tootsie is a 1982 comedy directed and produced by Sydney Pollack staring Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor who has trouble getting work due to his difficult personality.  When he finds out that there is an opening on a popular soap opera, Dorsey auditions.  The only problem is… the part is for a woman!  And Dorsey, disguised as “Dorothy Michaels,” finally gets the stardom he deserves.  Tootsie also stars Jessica Lange, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Dorsey’s love interest Julie Nichols.  The film was nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards.

Though more of a drama than a comedy, Tootsie is a well-written film with a lot of heart.  This movie also showcases some impressively bold performances from both Lange and Hoffman.  Tootsie also makes some important statements about show business and sexism.  And you gots’ta love that cheesy eighties soundtrack!

Is it worth seeing? Sure, but it’s more of a drama than a comedy.
